Six prompts for turning transcripts into pattern

A starting point to adapt, not a process to follow mechanically. A prompt that works at interview 3 needs adjustment by interview 15, because you are asking sharper questions by then.

Transcript in, structured signal out

Record every call, get a transcript, paste it into Claude with enough context about what you are building and what you currently believe your ICP to be. The more specific your context, the more useful the output. If a response feels generic, no direct quotes, no specific signals, nothing that surprises you, add more context and run it again.

As your interview volume grows, upload each transcript as a file to a dedicated Claude project rather than pasting raw text, it keeps the context clean and makes it easier to run analysis across a growing set of conversations.

How the prompts connect

Run Prompt 1 or Prompt 4 after each individual call depending on interview type, then run Prompt 2. Copy both outputs into your interview notes. When you are ready for pattern analysis, feed those outputs into Prompt 3, not the raw transcripts. Run Prompt 5 after eight or more interviews to validate your disqualification signal log. For Product-Led Growth (PLG) founders, run Prompt 6 before starting interviews and return to it before each canvas revision.

Extract the switching moment

Use after switcher interviews
Interview type B
Prompt

Here is a transcript from a customer research interview. I am building a B2B SaaS product in [your domain]. My current ICP hypothesis is [one sentence]. Please identify: (1) the specific moment or event that triggered the interviewee to start looking for a new solution, (2) what they were using before and why it was failing them, (3) what they were most anxious about when switching, and (4) any language they used to describe their problem that is worth noting for positioning. Quote directly from the transcript where possible.

ICP signal extraction

Use after any interview
Switcher or non-switcher
Prompt

Based on this transcript, what signals suggest this person is or is not an ideal early customer? My current ICP hypothesis is [one sentence]. Consider: role and seniority, company characteristics mentioned, urgency of the problem, budget signals, decision-making process, and any disqualifying factors. Summarize in three points: (1) ICP fit signals, (2) disqualifying signals, (3) one area to probe more deeply in your next interview.

Pattern analysis

Run after five or more interviews
Feed in Prompt 1 & 2 outputs
Prompt

Here are summaries from [number] customer research interviews. My current ICP hypothesis is [one sentence]. Please identify patterns across them: (1) the 2 to 3 most common triggering events that caused people to look for a new solution or that keep people from acting, (2) the most consistent language used to describe the core problem, (3) any patterns in who these people are, role, company type, situation, (4) any significant outliers that do not fit the emerging pattern, and (5) an assessment of whether the patterns identified are strong enough to support a canvas entry or whether more interviews are needed. Format as a structured summary I can use to refine my ICP hypothesis.

Non-switcher pain analysis

Use after non-switcher interviews
Interview type A
Prompt

Here is a transcript from a research interview with someone who has not yet switched solutions. I am building a B2B SaaS product in [your domain]. My current ICP hypothesis is [one sentence]. Please identify: (1) how they currently manage the problem and what workarounds they have built, (2) the reasons they have not yet acted on the problem, (3) any signals about what would trigger them to start actively searching for a solution, and (4) how urgent the problem appears to be relative to other priorities. Summarize as three bullet points: (1) current workaround, (2) most likely trigger event, and (3) biggest barrier to acting.

Disqualification signal extraction

Run after eight or more interviews
Validates, doesn't replace, your log
Prompt

Here are summaries from [number] customer research interviews. My current ICP hypothesis is [one sentence]. Based on the conversations, please identify: (1) the characteristics or situations that suggest a permanent fit issue versus those that suggest a timing barrier, distinguish clearly between the two, (2) any specific answers or statements given by people who turned out to be poor fits, and (3) any patterns in company type, role, or situation that suggest low conversion potential. Format as a structured summary I can use to update my disqualification signal log.

PLG conversion signal analysis

If your product has a free tier or self-serve signup
Run before interviews & each revision
Prompt

I am building a B2B SaaS product with a product-led growth component in [your domain]. My current ICP hypothesis is [one sentence]. Here is a summary of my sign-up, usage, and conversion data: [include conversion rate by signup cohort, average time from signup to conversion, and any segments or behaviors that correlate with higher conversion rates, plain language descriptions work as well as numbers]. Please identify: (1) any firmographic or behavioral patterns shared by users who convert from free to paid, (2) any patterns in usage behavior in the days or weeks before conversion, (3) based on the usage patterns described, what are the most likely barriers to conversion and what additional data would help confirm them, (4) how these patterns compare to or refine my current ICP hypothesis, and (5) a prioritized list of which user segments to interview first based on the conversion signals described. Format as three sections: strongest ICP signals from conversion data, biggest gaps in your current hypothesis, and recommended interview priorities.
